Beyond the Titanic Problem: Real-World Analytics in Action

We are starting a new series to explain how analytics works in the real world — not just the “Titanic Problem” or other textbook case studies that most people start with. The goal is to move away from artificially clean datasets and step into the messy, complex, and dynamic world of business data - where analytics truly drives decision-making.

In this series, we’ll walk through how organizations actually use data to make better decisions every day - from identifying the right business questions, collecting the relevant data, and preparing it for analysis, to designing dashboards that turn numbers into stories. You’ll see how real teams use metrics to decide what actions to take, and then use post-action analysis to evaluate whether those decisions really worked.

We’ll talk about how data flows through an organization - from sales and marketing to operations and finance - and how each function uses it differently. We’ll also explore common challenges such as missing data, bias, poor data quality, or unclear KPIs, and how teams overcome them in practice.

By the end of the series, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for analytics as an ongoing loop - observe, decide, act, analyze, improve - rather than a one-time exercise. The aim is to make analytics more relatable, practical, and connected to how businesses actually run.
